Challenge 12 Voting Thread

Forums:
Challenge 12 is now closed to entries. Thanks to everyone who contributed. I've cribbed a lot of this from Warren's last challenge, BTW, just in case any of you find it familiar. Voting starts now and will run until Monday 25th April at 6:00 GMT. The results will be announced in a new thread shortly after. Please correctly quote the name and title of each image you are voting for: If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can copy the Title-by-Artist text from the gallery web page and paste it into your post to avoid typing. Most other browsers allow something similar. You are allowed to vote in either or both galleries even if you did not enter any pictures. It's considered good manners to vote in both galleries. If you DID enter one or more photos in a a gallery, it is your civic duty to vote in that gallery to avoid giving yourself an unfair advantage (people are not allowed to vote for their own photos). Please place all votes in a message in this thread. PLEASE REPLY TO THIS FIRST MESSAGE WHEN YOU VOTE (NOT OTHER MESSAGES FURTHER DOWN THE THREAD). Otherwise, the moderator may not find your votes buried deep in long seies of replies. Voting rules are at: http://www.pbase.com/kodak_challenge/rules#voting and are summarized here for quick reference. If you have already committed the rules to memory, you may skip the rest of this message because nothing else has changed, Points: You have up to 16 points total to allocate to pictures in each gallery (32 total for both galleries). The winner in each gallery is the picture that attracts the most votes. In case of a tie, the most 4 pt votes, then 3 pt, etc will decide. Assign 4 pts only to your 1st choice: You must assign 4 points to the picture that is your 1st choice in a gallery. This is the minimum requirement for your votes to count for that gallery. 12 remaining pts/gallery: Distribution of the other 12 points in each gallery is optional, but strongly encouraged. You can award 1, 2, or 3 points to each other picture you choose. BUT REMEMBER: only ONE picture in each gallery can be awarded 4 points! Honourable mentions: We encourage you to make as many honourable mentions & comments as you like for pictures you do not vote for. And please feel free to add critiques and comments with your votes so we can see why you voted as you did. Ineligible pictures: You cannot vote for your own work. Assigning equal points: If you assign the same points to more than one picture in a gallery, please list those pictures in the same order as they appear in the gallery to make it easier for the moderator to count the votes. Voting message format: Please use this format for your voting message: Competition: 4pts - Title by Artist (then optionally, but strongly encouraged) [3, 2 or 1]pts - Title by Artist [3, 2 or 1]pts - Title by Artist (etc, to a maximum of 16 points) Exhibition: 4pts - Title by Artist (then optionally, but strongly encouraged) [3, 2 or 1]pts - Title by Artist [3, 2 or 1]pts- Title by Artist (etc, to a maximum of 16 points)

sorry for blonde moment.

let's start teh vote comptition gallery 4 pts - Gaudi in Brass by Flick Merauld 3 pts - It's a cats life! by Marc Hewson-Green 2 pts - "Peaceful reflection" by John Hill 2 pts - Mountains in Building by Shelby Frisch exibition gallery 4 pts - Two Sides of a Songbird by Charles Gervais 3 pts - The inside is out by Charles Gervais 3 pts - Turl Street by Flick Merauld 2 pts - :: Ruminations :: by Tim Ashley 2 pts - "florida_cyprus" by John Hill

This was a challenging Challenge. Competition Gallery: 4 pts - "It's a cats life!" by Marc Hewson-Green 3 pts - "Reflections on Parking" by Jono Slack 3 pts - "Reflections Gone" by Jono Slack 2 pts - "Building in building" by Marc Hewson-Green - I liked it better in color. 2 pt - "River Torrens" by Paul Rohal 1 pt - "Gaudi in Brass" by Flick Merauld 1 pt - "Reflections on Fatherhood" by Paul Fink Exhibition Gallery 4 pts - "Two Sides of a Songbird" by Charles Gervais 3 pts - "His Narcissistic Highness" by David Fink 3 pts - "Misleading Path Reflected" by Tim Ashley 2 pts - "Portrait of an Amateur Astronomer" by Blaine Byers 2 pts - "They came from beneath the sea...." by Quentin Bargate 1 pt - "Sunset in Florence" by Jono Slack 1 pt - "Mote and Sky" by Dave Millier Honorable mention - "Spheres in White and Blue" by Quentin Bargate "It's a cats life!" by Marc Hewson-Green makes me want intensely to look out that window. In that respect, the photo reminds me of one of my favorite paintings by Vuillard showing the interior of a room with an open door leading out to some place that you know is enchanting even though you can't see it. As you may have noticed, I'm a sucker for dogs and cats. Especially that basset hound in "Reflections on Parking" by Jono Slack.

Competition 4 pts - "On Twenty Seven Years (III)" by Tim Ashley 3 pts - "Tree Reflection with Pollen" by Warren Sarle 3 pts - "Narrabeen Morning" by Marc Hewson-Green 3 pts - "Bubbles" by Flick Merauld Exhibition 4 pts - "Fishin' Hole" by Albert Yanowich Jr. 3 pts - "Two Sides of a Songbird" by Charles Gervais 3 pts - "Bridge Lights" by Marc Hewson-Green 3 pts - "They came from beneath the sea" by Quentin Bargate

Competition: 4 pts - "Peaceful reflection" by John Hill. A stunner, oh so soft and tranquil (imho, I would've gotten rid of the, are they bubbles? in the upper left). 3 pts - "Eye in a Chalice of Gold" by Flick Merauld. I'm really taken with this image. It's not a "jump out at you" reflection, but still easily fits the theme. It really is gorgeous, another "on the wall" effort, imho. 3 pts - "Reflections on Parking" by Jono Slack. A real beauty, I can see that you really like seeing the "other" in things 2 pts - "Tulip" by Jono Slack. I'm inspired to try some flower studies myself, to see if I can replicate the wonderful feel of this reflection. I find myself wondering at how you lit this? 1 pts - "Brighton Pier" by Kate Westrop. Turning it on its side gave it such a wonderful feel of motion! 1 pts - Reflections Gone" by Jono Slack. I'm glad I tend to only read the descriptions and comments after having a good long look at posted photos. When I looked at this one, I just assumed that it was a rock that made the splash, and I thought it would have been even better if it were a retriever (I was thinking a Golden, though, for contrast). It was a serious LOL when I read that actually was your dog! Homourable mentions: "Suns" By Silas Slack. The title says it all for me, warm warm warm! "Mountains in Building" by Shelby Frisch. I echo Flick's first comment in the gallery, wonderful contrast. "River Torrens" by Paul Rohal. I know that the copyright/stock issue is something with which you are concerned, but without the title I would've given this image a few points for sure, what a beauty! (I'm a pano person myself). "Reflections of a Soft Egg Crate" by Warren Sarle. I think it's too bad that the glass beads weren't reflected more strongly in the decanter, as their collective texture is so visually interesting. Exhibition: 4 pts - "dream" by Joso Mrša. Beautifully tranquil, until I started to try to work out how it was done. I'd be proud to have this on my wall. 3 pts - "Ruminations" by Tim Ashley. A photo I wished I'd taken (I think that just the cows and their reflections, in the same pano shape, would look just fantastic). Really great title, more than appropriate, given the theme. 2 pts - "Spheres in White and Blue" by Quentin Bargate. Beautifully clean image. Upon reflection (oops, descriptor not intentional), I really like how the big blue sphere's reflection emerges out of the black. 2 pts - "On the Seafront" by Jono Slack. Like swirls of oil paints. 2 pts - "Sunset in Florence" by Jono Slack. Wonderfully warm, makes me eager to visit Firenze again. 2 pts - "His Narcissistic Highness" by David Fink. A picture may say a thousand words, but the extra three of the title just completed it for me! 1 pts - "Sunglass" by Flick Merauld. And you said that you didn't get any worthy photos in Cyprus! I'm a bit biased though, this image is less reflection than transillumination and I really like transilluminations Hmm, looking at my favorites, I find I am biased towards images that are natural out of the camera (as opposed to heavily manipulated images like my own entries), even though I really am taken with Tim Ashley's "Misleading Path Reflected". 'Twas a difficult challenge because, despite their prevalence, reflections are fleeting and harder to see than the "real" world, you really have to have an eye for them.

...I find myself revisting the galleries, seeing various images in new light, so to speak. I'm glad I voted the way I did, but I do want to say that I think that these contests are always a learning experience for me. Thanks for letting me participate

Although the nature of "reflection" was a dualistic concept, i too went for those images with a more literal interpretation, which means that light reflects an actual image off of a surface, moreso than light just bouncing off a reflective surface. With that in mind, the second issue in my decision was the visual clarity and interest of the reflection. -- COMPETITION 4 pts - River Torrens by Paul Rohal...pity Blue wasn't there to spoil this one! 2 pts - Reflections of the Past by Kate Westrop...melancholy, moody, brassy 2 pts - Anazazi Gecko by Warren Sarle...interesting layers, pretty in pink. 1 pt - Reflections on Fatherhood by Paul Fink...several things going on here 1 pt - Mountain in Building by Shelby Frisch...clear and contained 1 pt - Peaceful Reflection by John Hill 1 pt - Tulip by Jono Slack 1 pt - Bumper Bison by Albert Yanowhich 1 pt - Toiis for Boiis by Paul Rohal...so which Jaguar models were these??? This was very difficult. I've been forced to not vote for excellent work because the standard was so high this time, especially in the Exhibition gallery. Honourable mentions to everyone i didn't give points to - you all deserve it. All shots entitled Reflection on/in should be disqualified as it's been difficult getting the points into the right slots ;-( Could someone please run a double check on the votes for me as maths is not my strong point (even with dearest David holding my hand and supplying a ready configured Excel sheet for me). An excellent bunch of shots - would have given many more points if I had them.
